Growing school spirit through our house teams
At Birkdale South State School, school spirit is alive and thriving through our four House Teams: Banksia (Blue), Grevillea (Green), Wattle (Yellow) and Waratah (Red).
Named after iconic Australian native flora, our houses celebrate the beauty, resilience and uniqueness of our Australian environment while providing students with a strong sense of belonging and connection across year levels. From Prep through to Year 6, every student is proudly allocated to a house team and encouraged to contribute to its success throughout the year.
House points can be earned in a variety of ways. Students regularly receive points for demonstrating our CARE Bee-Leafs—Community of Kindness, Appreciation, Respect, Resilience and Effort—in the classroom, playground and wider school community. By living our values each day, students not only strengthen our positive school culture but also help their house move up the leaderboard.
House spirit also shines during our sporting events and competitions. Throughout the year, students have opportunities to earn valuable points through participation, teamwork and sportsmanship in:
- Year 4–6 Intra-House Sports Competitions
- Cross Country Carnival
- Swimming Carnival
- Athletics Carnival
While competition is always exciting, our house program focuses on much more than winning. It encourages students to build friendships across year levels, develop leadership skills, demonstrate teamwork and celebrate the achievements of others.
At the end of each term, we recognise the house that has accumulated the most points with a special reward. On the last Monday of each term, members of the winning house are invited to wear a shirt in their house colour to school as part of a celebratory free dress day while still wearing the remainder of their school uniform. Students also wear a School Hat that has their house colour on the inside of the hat so it can be flipped inside out on sporting days.
It is always a wonderful sight to see students proudly displaying their house pride and celebrating their collective efforts.
Whether earning points through kindness, effort, leadership or sporting participation, every student has the opportunity to contribute to their house and help make Birkdale South a place where everyone can Belong, Grow and Achieve.
