Curriculum – What We Learn
At Birkdale South State School, teaching and learning is aligned with the Australian Curriculum and designed to support every student to grow, achieve and develop the knowledge and skills needed for the future.
Our classroom teachers explicitly teach English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Science, building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and problem-solving. Learning experiences are carefully planned to engage students and support success for all learners.
Students participate in specialist lessons across a range of curriculum areas:
Health and Physical Education promotes teamwork, movement skills, health and active lifestyles.
Languages (Year 5 and Year 6) provides students with opportunities to learn Japanese and develop an appreciation of different cultures and global connections.
Technologies includes both Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies, where students engage in creative, hands-on learning and develop important digital literacy skills for the future.
The Arts includes Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts and Media Arts, encouraging students to express creativity, build confidence and participate in engaging learning experiences.

Teaching Practices – How We Teach

We use evidence-informed and explicit teaching practices to make learning clear, structured and achievable for all students. Our lessons follow a consistent learning process of Review – Teach – Practise – Apply.
Teachers begin by reviewing previous learning to strengthen understanding and help students make connections to new learning. New concepts and skills are then explicitly taught in clear and manageable steps. Students are provided with opportunities to practise their learning with teacher support before applying their knowledge independently.
Engagement is an important part of learning at our school. Teachers plan lessons that are purposeful, interactive and appropriately challenging so students remain active participants in their learning. Through supportive classrooms, strong relationships and clear expectations, students are encouraged to take pride in their learning and strive for success.

Literacy Learning – Reading Success Across the Curriculum
At Birkdale South State School, we believe strong literacy skills are the foundation for success across all learning areas. From Prep to Year 6, reading and literacy are explicitly taught through the Australian Curriculum using evidence-informed practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
Every classroom delivers a dedicated two-hour literacy block each day, providing students with consistent opportunities to develop reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and oral language skills. Our teaching follows a clear and structured approach, ensuring students are supported to build strong foundational literacy skills and confidence as learners.
We know that regular review and practise are essential for learning. Daily review occurs in every classroom to help students strengthen previously taught skills, improve long-term memory and successfully build on new learning.
All students read aloud every day to practise important word reading and fluency skills. Through our multi-tiered system of support, every student is provided with opportunities to read with an adult and receive targeted instruction based on their individual learning needs. This ensures students receive the right level of support, extension and intervention to continue making progress in reading.
Student progress is carefully monitored using the evidence-based assessment tool DIBELS. This universal screener helps teachers track individual student growth, identify learning needs early and ensure all students are making progress in their reading development.
Literacy learning is supported across the school through rich opportunities to develop language, comprehension and communication skills in all curriculum areas. At Birkdale South State School, we are committed to ensuring every student develops the literacy knowledge and skills needed to confidently access learning and experience success.
Student Progress and Feedback
At Birkdale South State School, we value and celebrate the growth, effort and success of every student. We believe that recognising progress helps students build confidence, develop motivation and take pride in their learning journey.
Our classrooms use Learning Walls to support student understanding and engagement in learning. Learning Walls help students clearly understand what they are learning, how they are progressing and what their next steps are. This supports students to develop independence, confidence and a strong sense of ownership over their learning.
Teachers regularly celebrate learning success within classrooms and provide opportunities for students to reflect on their growth and achievements across all learning areas.
Throughout the year, students and families are provided with opportunities to celebrate and share learning through classroom showcases, school events, performances, displays of student work and community connections. These opportunities help strengthen partnerships between school and home while recognising the achievements and progress of our students.
