Student leadership program

Lighthouse leaders: leading the way through example

At Birkdale South State School, we believe every student has the potential to be a leader. Our Student Leadership Program is designed to develop confident, compassionate and capable young people who lead by example and positively influence those around them.

Leadership at Birkdale South is not simply about wearing a badge—it is about demonstrating our CARE Bee-Leafs every day through kindness, appreciation, respect, resilience and effort. We encourage all students to see themselves as leaders within our school community and provide opportunities for leadership development from Year 5 through to Year 6.

Building future leaders in year 5

The leadership journey begins in Year 5, where students participate in a range of experiences designed to develop teamwork, resilience, communication and personal responsibility.

A key component of this journey is our annual Year 5 Leadership Camp at Emu Gully Adventure Education Centre. Over three days and two nights, students participate in challenging outdoor experiences that build confidence, problem-solving skills, perseverance and teamwork. Students learn the importance of supporting others, stepping outside their comfort zone and leading through service and example.

Throughout Year 5, students are encouraged to demonstrate leadership in their classrooms, playgrounds and wider school community as they prepare for the opportunities available in their final year of primary school.

Year 6 leadership application process

Students wishing to apply for a formal leadership position participate in a comprehensive selection process during Term 4 of Year 5.

All students complete a Student Leadership Accreditation Booklet, reflecting on their leadership skills, commitment to school values, communication skills, responsibility, participation in school activities and willingness to serve others. Students who successfully demonstrate these qualities may be invited to participate in a panel interview with members of the school leadership team and teaching staff.

Students applying for School Captain positions then progress to a second stage, where they deliver a leadership speech to students and staff before participating in a school-wide voting process.

The process ensures that student leaders are selected not only for their achievements, but for their demonstrated commitment to living the Birkdale South CARE Bee-Leafs and their capacity to positively influence others.

Leadership opportunities

Birkdale South offers a diverse range of leadership opportunities that allow students to contribute according to their strengths and passions. Formal leadership positions include:

  • School Captains
  • Care Captains
  • House Captains
  • Student Council Representatives
  • Chaplaincy Captain
  • Arts Captain
  • STEM Captain
  • Chess Captain
  • First Nations Captain
  • Environmental Captain

These positions provide students with opportunities to lead assemblies, support younger students, organise events, promote wellbeing initiatives, encourage participation and represent the school within the wider community.

Bridgebuilder leadership training

A unique feature of leadership at Birkdale South is our Bridgebuilder Leadership Program.

All Year 6 student leaders participate in specialised Bridgebuilder Leadership Training, equipping them with practical skills in communication, empathy, conflict resolution and relationship building. Through this training, students learn how to support their peers, foster positive interactions and contribute to a culture of belonging across the school.

These skills are then put into action through our Bridgebuilder Buddy Program.

Bridgebuilder buddy program

As part of the Buddy Program, Year 6 students are paired with younger students and play an important role in helping them feel connected, supported and valued within the school community.

Bridgebuilder Buddies assist younger students by:

  • Building positive friendships
  • Supporting transitions and school routines
  • Encouraging inclusion during playtimes
  • Modelling respectful behaviour and positive communication
  • Demonstrating the CARE Bee-Leafs in action

The program provides valuable leadership experiences for our Year 6 students while strengthening relationships across year levels and fostering a strong sense of community.

Leading through service

At Birkdale South, leadership is built on the belief that the best leaders serve others. Our student leaders are expected to demonstrate excellent manners, responsible behaviour, pride in their school and a commitment to helping others succeed. They act as ambassadors for our school and play an important role in shaping the positive culture that makes Birkdale South such a special place to learn.

Through leadership opportunities, service learning, mentorship and character development, we empower our students to become confident young people who are ready to make a positive difference in their school, community and beyond.

Belong. Grow. Achieve.

At Birkdale South State School, our Lighthouse Leaders shine brightly by leading with kindness, courage, integrity and effort—guiding others and helping every student feel that they belong.

Student Council

Student voice is highly valued at Birkdale South State School, and our Student Council provides students with authentic opportunities to contribute to school decision-making and improvement.

Each year, students from Years 3–6 nominate and elect peers to represent their classes on the Student Council. These student representatives meet regularly with staff to discuss ideas, provide feedback and identify ways to enhance school life for all students.

The Student Council plays an active role in planning and leading fundraising initiatives throughout the year. Funds raised by students are reinvested directly into projects and resources that benefit the school community. Past Student Council initiatives have supported the development of:

  • School gardens and sustainability projects
  • Worm farms and composting systems
  • Native bee hives and environmental programs
  • STEM equipment and technology resources
  • Library books and learning resources;
  • Playground and student wellbeing initiatives

Through participation in Student Council, students develop leadership, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills while learning the importance of civic responsibility and service to others.

The Student Council reflects our commitment to empowering students as active contributors to their school community and ensuring that every student has a voice in helping shape the future of Birkdale South State School.>
