The BYOD Laptop Program
Birkdale South has revitalised the BYOD program as a Student Laptop Program (commencing from Year 4).
The goal is to use laptops as tools for learning and skill development, rather than entertainment devices. With laptops, students become producers of technology rather than just consumers. Consultation with local high schools and suppliers has confirmed that a base model student laptop, meeting Education Queensland specifications, provides good value and minimal cost difference compared to previous iPad requirements.
The school has worked with providers to arrange recommended purchase options, available through our website. To support families, a Help Desk is available during the setup phase of the program. Unlike iPads, laptops do not require additional paid apps. The only accessory required is a protective case.
The program will be phased in across Year 3–6 over several years. Families experiencing hardship will be supported through access to equity devices.
Parent information sessions are held regularly to explain the program, outline device setup, and answer questions. Parents will receive details of upcoming sessions through the school’s communication channels.
“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” – John Dewey
As technology evolves, it is important that our students are equipped with the skills needed for lifelong learning, future employment, and responsible digital citizenship.
