Our upper primary classes range from Year 3 to Year 6.
Language Learning
At Birkdale South State School, students study the Japanese language
and culture in Years 5 and 6. The program is aligned to the new national
Curriculum for Languages. Students are exposed to multiple aspects of
Japanese culture, customs, celebrations and language. These learning
opportunities allow students to understand and appreciate another
culture and enhance appreciation of their own culture and language.
The 4 macro skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are
assessed throughout the school year. The use of a variety of resources,
strategies, group activities and direct teaching allows for learning by
all students.
Students have opportunities to participate in the annual Japan Week
in Term 3, which is a week of activities and celebrations about Japan.
This is available to all year levels. Year 6 students are invited to
experience authentic Japanese cuisine at a local restaurant and our
school sometimes hosts Japanese native speakers, language students who
assist in the Japanese classroom.
