Instrumental Music

Birkdale South provides opportunities for students to participate in various ensembles including Junior, Senior and Boys Choir, Junior and Senior Band as well as Junior and Senior Strings. Specialist instrumental instructors are responsible for providing tuition for band and strings while the classroom music teacher conducts the choirs.

Choir attend an excursion to Sylvan Woods Aged Care a few times throughout the year.

Classroom Music

Students also receive a minimum of 30 minutes of Classroom Music each week. Students will use the concepts and materials of music to compose, improvise, arrange, perform, conduct and respond to their own and others’ work. They will learn the elements of music including duration (rhythm and tempo), dynamics, form, pitch (melody and harmony), and timbre (sound texture and quality). Students will develop and revisit skills, techniques, knowledge and understanding with increasing depth and complexity.

Aims of the Inclusive Music Program

- To provide a school music program that ensures that educational outcomes are maximised for all students.

- To provide opportunity for musical development of students through instrumental and class programs.

- To provide ensemble and group experiences so that students develop performance skills as an integral part of their music education.

External Programs

Students also have access to guitar, drum and piano tuition which is run by external companies for a set fee. Students receive a 30 minute group lesson each week to develop skills on these instruments.
